In-house product · programmatic local search

How AlcaStars built a programmatic local-search engine from zero.

AlcaStars is ALCA Software’s in-house local commerce platform. We built the crawlable business-profile templates, the state, city and category hubs, the LocalBusiness and Review structured data and the internal-link graph that connects them — a programmatic local-search architecture built from zero alongside the product itself.

The upward trend reflects a programmatic architecture connecting business profiles with states, cities and categories. These figures represent Google Search performance, not users, visits or completed purchases.

Organic search program

A programmatic local-search architecture, built from zero

AlcaStars launched as a new domain with no established search footprint, into a category where the demand is overwhelmingly long-tail: people looking for one specific business, in one specific place, right now. The only way to be eligible for that demand at scale is to generate pages that are genuinely useful one by one — and to stop generating them when the data cannot support it.

The challenge

  • A new platform with no domain history and no established search footprint.
  • Thousands of local business entities, each of which had to justify its own URL.
  • Uneven source data — some businesses arrived with hours, photos and reviews, many with barely a name and a category.

The strategy

  • Crawlable business-profile templates rendered server-side, so every profile exists in the initial HTML rather than after client-side execution.
  • State, city and category hubs that give both users and crawlers a path into the long tail without relying on internal search.
  • Titles built around what people actually search for near a business name: hours, reviews and phone.
  • LocalBusiness, Review and Breadcrumb structured data generated from the same records that render the page, so schema and visible content cannot drift apart.
  • Contextual internal linking between profiles, their location and their category, rather than a flat list.
  • Searchable, user-generated business data — reviews and photos — so a profile keeps getting more useful after it is published.

The architecture

Every page type has a defined place in one graph, so a profile is always reachable from a hub and every hub has a reason to exist.

  1. Business
  2. State
  3. City
  4. Category
  5. Tags

The observable outcome

Thousands of useful landing pages are published and available for local long-tail demand, each one crawlable, structured and connected to the hubs above it. That is what the architecture produced; what search engines do with it is measured separately, and only with Search Console data.

The next growth phase

  • Consolidate the .com and .com.ve properties behind one canonical set of URLs.
  • Keep the sitemap limited to canonical URLs, segmented by page type.
  • Tighten the quality threshold so sparse records stay out of the index until their data improves.
  • Improve caching and reduce the JavaScript required to render a profile.
  • Build editorial authority around the categories where the platform is strongest.

What this case study does and does not claim

  • Search results vary by query, location, competitor behavior and algorithm changes.
  • An architecture and a set of published pages do not, on their own, prove causation.
  • Quantitative search performance is shown on this page only when it is backed by Google Search Console evidence.

The challenge

Neighborhood businesses compete against large chains without the digital tools those chains take for granted: a way to get discovered, a way to reward repeat customers, and a way to turn happy customers into word-of-mouth. Each of those usually means a separate app or service, which small merchants can’t justify or manage.

The goal was a single platform that unites discovery, loyalty and recommendation — designed for the realities of the Venezuelan market, where WhatsApp is the dominant channel and asking customers to install yet another app is a non-starter.

The ALCA solution

ALCA designed and built AlcaStars from scratch — product, design, web, mobile and backend — as one coherent experience with three connected products: a local directory, the AlcaPerks loyalty program and the AlcaCreators ambassador network.

Rather than force customers into a new app, the loyalty layer works directly from the customer’s phone through QR codes and WhatsApp, which removes the biggest point of friction in adoption. The architecture is built to roll out country by country across Latin America.

Key modules & features

Local directory

Anyone can discover restaurants, cafés, barbershops, gyms, vets, bakeries and other local businesses in their area.

AlcaPerks loyalty

A digital points program that replaces cardboard punch-cards — onboarding by QR or WhatsApp, with no extra app for the customer.

AlcaCreators network

A network of local ambassadors, each with their own curated recommendations page, on a four-tier program (Explorer, Favorite, Ambassador, Legend).

AlcaSpotlight

A monthly feature that turns a selected creator’s recommendations into professional content for their channels and ALCA’s.

Merchant plans

Tiered subscriptions for businesses (Impulso, Pro and a custom Enterprise tier) so merchants can start small and grow.

Behavior data

Because loyalty runs digitally, participating merchants get real customer-behavior data instead of a lost paper card.

How it works

  1. 1Customer discovers a local business through the directory
  2. 2Customer joins AlcaPerks via a QR code or WhatsApp — no app install
  3. 3Points accrue for in-person and delivery purchases
  4. 4Ambassadors publish curated recommendations on their own page
  5. 5Merchants subscribe to a plan and access their customer data

Architecture & approach

AlcaPerks is built to work in both in-person and delivery scenarios, and the onboarding deliberately leans on QR and WhatsApp — the channels customers already use — rather than a separate consumer app. The platform is structured for multi-country rollout, with dedicated market pages already prepared for Argentina, the Dominican Republic and Peru.
